THE FIRST 100 YEARS
BY NEIL MILLER
A Century of Britain's Oldest Teddy Bear Manufacturer
The front cover of this book is adapted from the cover of
A Rag Book, first printed in 1908.
Formed in London in 1903, the Dean's Rag Book Company Ltd celebrates its centenary in a very different world to that into which it entered in the Edwardian era.
Dean's was one of the founding fathers of the toy industry at the turn of last century, and is possibly the only one, which today remains in private ownership.
At the height of its popularity, Deans employed hundreds of workers, and yet only fifteen years ago, it was on the verge of extinction.
The toy trade, as such, now depends on overseas production, and the fact that Deans still manufactures almost all of its products in Britain, makes it an enigma in the current climate.
Dean's created Dismal Desmond, produced the very first Mickey Mouse toy, invented the rag brick, but is now primarily known as Britain's oldest Teddy Bear manufacturer.
The book is very much the personal view of the current Dean's Managing Director, Neil Miller, and contains his asessments of the state of the company on its journey through a century - a journey which has often been far from easy.
