George Fredierich Handel (1685-1759)
Handel was a German/British Baroque composer, who was leading composer of concerti grossi, operas and oratorios.
He was born on April 23rd, 1685 in Halle/Saxony-Germany, the same year that Johann Sebastian Bach was born.
He lived most of his adult life in England, becoming a subject of the British crown in 1727.
His most famous piece is “Messiah”, an oratorio set in texts from the King James Bible, with the great “Hallelujah” at the end of the second part
He deeply influenced many of the composers who came after him, including Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, and his work helped lead the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era.
Handel died on April 14th, 1759 in London and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
