A wonderful bear rich in history and religion
The History of Martin Luther (1483-1546) Martin Luther was born 1483 in Eisleben, Germany.
The Augustinereremiten Monk fought for the religious liberty.
He initiated the Reformation in 1517 and established the Protestantism. In autumn 1517 he published 95 thesis at the castle church in Wittenberg.
For all he criticized the indulgence. 1521 in Worms, it came to the breach with the church, when he refused to retract his thesis. His famous words were: ‘Here I am standing, I can do nothing else, God helps me, Amen!’
Nevertheless, Luther didn’t want to split the church in the first, he only wanted to reform it, but because he was banished from the church and the state, he founded the Evangelical Church.
1525 Martin Luther married the former Nun Katharina von Bora, with it he confessed consciously to the wedlock.
The Holy Bible was for him the only authority referring questions about the dogma, therefore he wanted that everybody can read it.
So he started to translate the Bible into German language.
During his stay at the castle ‘Wartburg’ 1521/22, where he bore the cover name knight ‘Junker Jorg’, he translated the New Testament into German language.
From April until October 1530 he found a hiding place at the castle ‘Veste Coburg’. 1534 he finished his translation of the Bible and published the first complete edition of the German Bible.
Thanks to the invention of the letterpress printing, the German Bible spread in lighting speed.
Now all people were able to read the Bible by themselves.
Luther was a brilliant creator of new words, with his Bible translation he established the High German language for whole of Germany.
He influenced the development of the German language lastingly like no other.
Without him the modern Germany would not be thinkable.
He called for and furthered the education of the people.
With it he laid the foundations of the modern knowledge society. 1546 Martin Luther passed away in Eisleben and was buried in Wittenberg.
