STEIFF MARGARETE MEMORIAL STEIFF LIMITED EDITION OF 1100
2019 marks the 110th anniversary of Margarete Steiff’s passing. In memory of this special lady, her companion from the iconic photo has been recreated as the Margarete Memorial Teddy. He is a homage to the unconventional, courageous innovator who founded the Steiff company. He is made of the finest white Schulte mohair and is entirely unique thanks to his pointed, cat-like ears. Subtle touches of airbrushing, a hand-stitched nose and bring this fellow to life.
Margarete Steiff sat in her wheelchair, contemplating the full, rich life that she led. In the early 1900’s, this was a typical setting for the company founder. One of the last photos ever taken shows Margarete holding a white Teddy bear named Baho and her trusty doggy companion lying at her feet. In the picture, the angle of Margarete’s hand and the cap the bear is wearing combine to make his ears look pointed – almost like those of a cat. Local artist Otto Neubrand captured the scene in 1947 in an oil painting that can still be seen in the Steiff Museum to this day.
Each bear is a work of art that is a tribute to the Steiff Company and to the extraordinary personality of its founder Margarette Steiff.
